I am so excited to be sharing all the basic volleyball tips you will need to improve your game. You will learn the proper technique to pass, set, and hit a volleyball, as well as, some basic tips and tricks to improve your skill. There are six rotations in volleyball, which means there are six different positions. These six positions include: outside hitter, middle blocker, setter, libero, and opposites. All positions are of equal importance and all positions require a different skill set.

Volleyball Tips for Passers

Passing in the volleyball world is defined as the most important part of the game. The reason coaches and players will often times say this is because it is the first contact. Without the first contact (passing) there would be no second or third contact. Here are five tips you can use next time you try passing a volleyball:

  • Knees Over Toes– your strength to lift the ball up with your platform should come from your legs, not your platform (arms). By keeping your knees over your toes you are putting yourself in a down low and ready position for when the ball comes.
  • Lock Your Elbows- locking your elbows will create a solid and straight platform. Without a solid platform it will be extremely difficult to pass the ball directly to your setter.
  • Take a Deep Breath– Positive self talk is a very important part of the game. Take a deep breath and remember you can do anything you put your mind to. Passing is about 50% mental and 50% physical, meaning that if you believe it you can do it!
  • Talk, Talk, Talk– Communication with your teammates is very helpful when you are passing. Talking to your teammates and creating a connection with each one will help you and your team improve your passing and get the results you are looking for. Trust the process and call the ball!
  • Move your Feet– When you are passing you should move to the ball and get behind it. Reaching and diving are both useful emergency moves, but they are not nearly as reliable as moving your feet and getting behind the ball.

Volleyball Tips for Hitters

Hitting is not only an important part of the game of volleyball, but often considered to be the most fun. Many great hitters are versatile. They are able to switch up playing outside, middle, rightsize, and can even play great defense. Here are five tips you can use to up your game and become a better hitter:

  • Snap Your Wrist– Snapping your wrist will cause the ball to go at a downward angle and hit the floor faster. The faster the arm swing and the more wrist snap you use the harder it will be for the other teams defenders.
  • Use Your Core– Being able to use and have a strong core is super important. Your core will help you generate more power so you will ultimately be able to hit the ball harder.
  • Work on Your Vertical– Having a high vertical as a hitter will make your life a lot easier. Being able to hit and see over your block is super important when you are trying to decide what spots on the court are open.
  • Mix Up Your Shots– It is important for hitters to move around where they hit the ball. Moving the ball around and mixing up your shots makes it harder for the other team to play defense and makes it easier for you to score.

Volleyball Tips for Setters

The setter is often considered to be the most important position on the court. The setter is almost always involved in the play. A setter must be consistent and have great leadership skills. Below you will find tips on how to improve your game and become a better setter.

  • Get Your Feet Squared– Getting your feet lined up to where you want to set the ball will help you have more control to push the ball in the right direction. Having you feet squared up will also make it easier for you to be able to move and cover your hitter after you set.
  • Finish Your Set– Finishing through the ball after you set will help you get the ball nice and high for your hitter. Finishing your set is also important because it will make you less likely to double and cost a point for your team.
  • Cover Your Hitters– Covering your hitters gives them a sense of security. Covering your hitters lets them know that you got their back and are going to try your hardest to make them look good. Every great setter will run and cover the hitters to the best of their abilities.
  • Call the ball– Everyone knows that the setter has the second ball, but that does not mean you should refrain from letting your teammates know that you are there. Calling the ball will eliminate communication errors with your team and create a positive work environment.
