Why Well-being is Important

Well-being is all about feeling good physically, mentally and emotionally.

As a student and working professional, stress can arise in many forms. From upcoming deadlines, assessments, projects and expectations, it can often feel heavy to manage these feelings.

It is difficult when we feel run down or stressed. It can make us feel tired, have trouble concentrating or not feel up to the things that would previously bring us joy. That is what happens when your well-being is not at its best. When you feel good and take care of yourself, those negative feelings start to fade away.

Well-being goes beyond just feeling happy. It encompasses several key dimensions:

  • Physical: This includes your overall fitness, energy levels and how well your body functions. Eating nutritious foods, getting enough sleep and exercising regularly are all crucial to physical well-being.
  • Mental: This refers to your emotional and psychological state. It includes your ability to manage stress, cope with challenges and maintain positive relationships.
  • Social: Strong social connections are essential to happiness and well-being. Spending time with loved ones, feeling a sense of belonging and having a support system all contribute to this dimension.
  • Emotional: This involves your ability to understand and express your emotions in a healthy way. Being aware of your feelings, and being able to manage them effectively, is key to emotional well-being.

While these dimensions are interconnected, they can also be nurtured independently. As an individual who is focused on maintaining positive mental health, it is important for me to acknowledge the various components that go into it. When I do not take care of my emotional and physical needs, my social stamina and well-being suffer. I have found success in finding balance between these various factors.

How Health and Well-being Affect Happiness

Health, happiness and well-being flow together. When you take care of your physical and mental health, you naturally feel better. Here are some examples of how:

  • Feeling good physically: When you get enough sleep, eat healthy foods and exercise regularly, you have more energy to do the things you love. Physical activity helps to calm my insecurities and build my confidence.
  • Strong mental health: Taking care of your mental well-being means managing stress, practicing positive thinking and building strong relationships. When your mind is healthy, you can face challenges with a positive attitude and find joy in everyday moments.
  • Reduced stress and anxiety: Chronic stress and anxiety can take a toll on your mind and body. By prioritizing well-being practices like relaxation techniques, healthy eating and exercise, you can manage stress more effectively and experience greater feelings of calmness and joy.
  • Improved self-esteem: When you take care of yourself and feel good about your physical and mental health, your self-esteem naturally increases. This can lead to greater confidence, resilience and a more positive outlook on life.
  • Enhanced emotional regulation: Practices like mindfulness and meditation can help you to manage difficult emotions in a healthy way. This can lead to greater emotional stability and overall happiness.

The more you prioritize your well-being, the happier you will feel overall!

Health Practices that Contribute to Your Well-being

Let us dive into some simple health practices that you can incorporate into your daily routine to boost your well-being and happiness:

  • Fuel Your Body with Nutritious Foods: Your body needs healthy foods to function at its best. According to Aspire Counseling Network, a healthy diet includes: fruits, vegetables, proteins, legumes and whole grains. Remember to stay hydrated by drinking water as well!
  • Move Your Body: Exercise is a powerful mood booster. According to the National Institutes of Health, “Just 30 minutes a day of walking can boost mood and reduce stress.” Walking has become a calming, safe space for me where I can get movement in, while also focusing on my emotional wellness. I feel more confident in myself as I take more steps, knowing that I am benefiting my mind, body and soul.
  • Stress Less, Live More: We all face stress, but it is important to learn healthy ways to manage it. I look to find activities and hobbies that bring me relaxation. This can be personalized to you! When I go through a period of stress, techniques such as breathing and meditation help me to feel calm.
  • Connect with Others: Strong social connections are essential for well-being. Creating and fostering both new and long-term relationships help me to feel connected to the world around me. Always ask for help when you need it. Reaching out to family and friends when I am feeling down has allowed me to feel safe and cared for.
  • Enjoy Some Rest: A good night’s sleep is essential for both physical and mental health. According to the National Institutes of Health, “Adults need 7 or more hours each night, school-age kids need 9-12, and teens need 8-10.” The quality of your sleep is important as well!
  • Practice Gratitude: Taking time to appreciate the good things in your life can significantly boost your mood. I enjoy listing 5-10 things a day that I am grateful for, as well as 5-10 things that I am proud of myself for.
  • Do Something Kind: Helping others is a great way to feel good and connect with your community. Volunteer your time, do a favor for someone in need, or donate to a cause you care about. Aspire Counseling Network describes how, “When you’re involved in providing solutions for others, you may find increased ease in overcoming your own obstacles.”
