Essex County Regatta Playground: A Nautical Adventure- West Orange, NJ

Have you ever wanted to sail the high seas without leaving land? The Regatta Playground is your answer! This nautical-themed wonderland sparks imaginations with its ship-like structures and interactive elements. You’ll find accessible ramps, safe ground coverings, and plenty of shade. This park is great for all ages, and you’ll love the views of the water. This playground is one of my kid’s favorite places to visit during the spring and summer months. There are many other activities besides the playground that families can enjoy like the Turtle Back Zoo (which is close by), paddle boat, mini golf,  picnic tables, birthday celebrations, restaurants, and food vendors. The park also has plenty of parking and accessible restrooms. Without a doubt, this is one of the best playgrounds and parks in North NJ for families!

Imagine your kids playing with the Statue of Liberty as their backdrop. This playground offers stunning city views and wide-open spaces for running and exploring. The play structures are modern and well-maintained, and there are separate areas for different age groups. Plus, the park itself is a fantastic place for a picnic. 2 years ago, my family and I started the tradition of having a picnic in this park every summer, and let me tell you, it is one of the best experiences. You can bring food, snacks, non-alcoholic beverages, your favorite kid’s toys, your favorite book–and spend a magical day that you and your kids will never forget. 

Ponderosa Farm Park: Nature and Play Combined- Scotch Plains, NJ

If your little ones love nature, Ponderosa Farm Park is a must-visit. This park blends natural play areas with traditional playground equipment. You’ll find walking trails, open fields, and play structures that encourage exploration. It’s a peaceful escape from the city buzz. My family’s favorite thing about this park is their splash pad which opens during the summer months for kids and adults to cool off at no cost. 

Nomahegan Park: A Community Favorite- Cranford, NJ

Nomahegan Park is a true community gem. It’s known for its well-maintained equipment and friendly atmosphere. You’ll find play areas for toddlers and older kids, plus plenty of benches for parents. You can go on a nature hunt, a walk or a bike ride. The park also hosts community events, so check their calendar

 Branch Brook Park Playground: Cherry Blossoms and Playtime- Newark, NJ

During spring, Branch Brook Park is a sight to behold with its cherry blossoms and their annual festival. But it’s also home to a fantastic playground! The equipment is modern and safe, and there are plenty of open spaces for kids to run around. This is a great place to spend a whole day. My recommendation is to visit the annual Cherry Blossom Festival to take beautiful family pictures and enjoy all family-oriented activities and events. While you are there, don’t forget to visit the impressive and breathtaking–Newark Cathedral Basilica.

Yanticaw Park: A Local Treasure- Nutley, NJ

I recently discovered Yanticaw Park which is a local treasure that often gets overlooked. It’s a smaller park, but it packs a punch with its well-designed play area and friendly atmosphere. You’ll find swings, slides, and climbing structures, all in a safe and clean environment. The parks in Nutley are considered the “crown jewel” of the Essex County Park systems. We are planning more visits to this park this summer!

Watsessing Park’s All Access Playground: Inclusive Fun for Everyone- Bloomfield, NJ

This playground is a testament to inclusivity. It’s designed to be accessible to children of all abilities, with ramps, sensory play elements, and adaptive equipment. You’ll see kids of all ages and backgrounds playing together, creating a truly heartwarming experience.

Dundee Island Park: A Hidden Waterfront Gem- Passaic, NJ

Dundee Island Park is a hidden gem along the Passaic River. The playground is modern and well-maintained, and the waterfront views are stunning. You’ll find plenty of shade, which is perfect for hot summer days. This park is on our to-do list this summer!

Lyndhurst Municipal Park: Community Fun and Safety- Lyndhurst, NJ

Lyndhurst Municipal Park is a great example of a community-focused playground. You’ll find well-maintained equipment, safe ground coverings, and a friendly atmosphere. The park also hosts community events, so check their schedule! The restrooms are always clean and well-maintained. My kids love the water fountain that changes colors with its light system.

Wheeler Spray Park: Cool Off and Play! – Linden, NJ

When the summer heat hits, Wheeler Spray Park is the place to be and without a doubt one of the best playgrounds and parks in North NJ for families, especially in those hot summer months. This splash pad is a fantastic way for kids to cool off and have fun. The water features are safe and engaging, and there’s plenty of space for parents to relax. I celebrated my son’s 4th birthday here and the place was incredible. You are allowed to bring your own food, snacks, beverages, cake and anything you can think of to make a birthday magical or to spend a hot summer day with your loved ones. The park does charge a small fee per person, and you can purchase tickets in advance online. Fee as of 2024, county residents (ID required) Youth 12 and under $2, adults 18 and over $3. Out-of-county residents,12 and under $4, and adults $6.
