“I’m gonna start going to the gym and get in the best shape of my life.”
Two days of going to the gym…
“Omg, working out is not fun. I hate it here!”
Who else has been here or is here right now? Well, you’re not alone. The truth is, many individuals feel the exact same way about exercising. We want to get fit and develop healthier lifestyles, so we can look good, feel good, and most importantly, live longer lives. However, we lack motivation and consistency because, let’s be honest, working out isn’t typically described as fun. It doesn’t have to be this way though. Yes, I said it. Exercising does not have to be this dreadful, energy-consuming, monotonous task. I know this will take some convincing, which is why in this article, I will show you how to make working out fun.
Below, we’ll explore five creative ways to make your workouts more enjoyable. Follow them, and soon you won’t even realize you’re working out because you’re having so much fun!
1. Switch Up Workout Routines

“Doing the same workout every single day is like commuting home from work every day, at a certain point, you zone the whole thing out because it’s so tedious.”
Pete McCall
Switching up your workout routine is super important when it comes to staying fit and staying motivated. Working out can quickly become boring or repetitive for anyone doing the same exercises over and over again. There’s no fun in that for you or your body because eventually, it will plateau from performing the same workout routine consistently. Your body will adapt and no longer find your go-to exercises challenging, which can hinder you from progressing or reaching your fitness goals.
Exercise physiologist and host of All About Fitness, Pete McCall, describes what keeping the same workout routine is like best. “Doing the same workout every single day is like commuting home from work every day, at a certain point, you zone the whole thing out because it’s so tedious.” This is why switching workout routines is essential. Creating new workouts keeps you focused and engaged. It allows you to enjoy your time at the gym while whipping your body into shape at the same time.
Exercising should not seem like a meaningless task because when it’s viewed that way, there is no excitement, no drive, or energy to keep going. A 2019 research conducted showed that switching up your workout routine can increase your motivation without interfering with results. In other words, adding variety or novelty to your fitness plan will most likely benefit you in the long run. So before you even allow yourself a chance to get bored, try some new exercises and mix things up a bit. You’ll have so much more fun when you challenge yourself instead of just going through the motions.
When to Switch Up Workout Routine?
Not sure exactly when to switch up your routine? No problem! I can help with that. Determining when to adjust your workout routine can be tricky. However, there are several factors that can help you decide when the time is right. These are your rate of progress, your fitness goals, and your enjoyment. Everyone’s body is different, so your progress won’t be the same as others.
When you look in the mirror week after week and don’t notice any physical improvement or your body no longer feels sore after working out, that’s a sign that some changes to your routine may be needed. Ignoring these signs will only delay your progress and leave you not only looking the same but feeling the same as well. So don’t be afraid to add those weights! No pain, no gain, right? Your workout routine should always align with your goals.
If you have a goal you’re trying to reach, but the exercises you’re doing aren’t getting you there, then guess what? Yup, your fitness program needs some adjusting. Figuring out what adjustments to make may take some time, but once you discover them, you’ll be happy you made those changes. The better your routine works for you, the faster you’ll achieve your goals.
One of the most important factors of working out is your enjoyment. If you’re not having fun while working out and just feel miserable every second of it, then you should consider switching up your routine. It’s already nerve-racking that we have to exercise regularly to stay in good health, but the least we could do is have fun while doing it.
If you’re looking for a more specific answer on when to switch up your workout routine, personal training manager Alex Sonoglo has one that’s pretty straightforward. “It is best to mix up a few different movements in your workout as frequently as every week for your body to adapt and change, and you should transition your entire routine every 6–8 weeks.” Hopefully, this gives you a better idea of when to modify your workouts.
However, as you take in this advice, it’s important to remember that no one knows yourself better than you, so if you feel it’s time to switch it up in the gym, then it’s time. The overall goal is to have fun while creating a better version of yourself.
2. Bring a Buddy to Work Out With

“A friend will motivate and support you. They will keep you on your toes and make sure you stay consistent in reaching your goals.”
Still not too fond of fun working out? Try adding another human into the mix. By human, I mean your best friend or someone you’re cool with. If you enjoy spending time with them regularly, you’ll likely enjoy spending time with them at the gym. There are so many benefits of working out with a friend. A friend will motivate and support you. They will keep you on your toes and make sure you stay consistent in reaching your goals.
Working out with a buddy also means safer workout sessions. Having a second set of eyes or someone to spot you on machines could keep you from injuring yourself. A friend can also suggest new exercise ideas that will enhance your workout.
Most importantly, a friend will distract you from the fact that you’re working out because you’re socializing instead of looking at the clock. According to Russian Advantage Personal Training, recent studies found that the likelihood of quitting working out decreases between 48% and 51% when you exercise with a friend. This shows that working out with a partner can be significant in your fitness journey. Now, if you can’t find a buddy that’s as determined as you to get fit, don’t worry. Having fun while working out by yourself is still possible. Keep reading, and you’ll see how.
3. Change Locations

“When you’re going to the same building every day, staring at the same walls, looking at the same equipment and people, exercising could become a tedious part of your life that you despise doing.”
If you’re like me, you like to try new things and experience different sceneries/environments. This could be your solution to having a more enjoyable workout. Being adventurous and open means you’d rather not visit the same setting every day because it would start to lack excitement and novelty. If you fit this description and work out regularly at the same place, it’s no surprise you’re not having fun.
When you’re going to the same building every day, staring at the same walls, looking at the same equipment and people, exercising could become a tedious part of your life that you despise doing. However, you don’t want that if your goal is to stay fit, so here’s what you should do. Change locations every so often when you exercise, so it stays interesting. You don’t always have to go to the gym. Instead, try working out at home or outside at a local park or beach. There are also other physical activities in different settings that will challenge your endurance, such as rock climbing, hiking, swimming, bike riding, dancing, etc.
With all of these options, there really isn’t an excuse to be bored when working out. Changing workout locations gives you that reset or shift you may need from what you’re used to. However, the most important thing is that it creates more excitement and fun while staying fit. So, if I were you, I would start planning new locations for my workouts asap.
Here’s an extended list of places that people go to make working out fun!
4. Make the Ultimate Workout Playlist

“An ultimate workout playlist will also take your mind off the fact that you’re working out because you’re jamming to tunes that you love.”
I’m sure many of us can agree that if it’s one thing that gets us through the day, it’s music. Why do you think we hear it everywhere we go? Listening to music while working out can boost your gym experience, but you don’t want just any playlist to exercise to. You want the ultimate workout playlist.
This type of playlist will motivate you and push you to your limit. It will get you amped during intense sets and relaxed during cooldowns. An ultimate workout playlist will also take your mind off the fact that you’re working out because you’re jamming to tunes that you love. Lastly, this type of playlist will make you feel good about yourself and like you can conquer it all. That is an ultimate workout playlist. Creating one doesn’t take long and will only improve your performance.
According to the National Center for Health Research, a 2010 study reported that listening to music while exercising leads to “higher-than-expected levels of endurance, power, productivity, or strength. Overall, an ultimate workout playlist is a must for your fitness sessions. It caters to your music taste and fits your workout routine, which is why you will have a lot more fun working out with one.
5. Reward Yourself

“Rewarding yourself for your hard work is definitely a reason to smile and have fun while exercising. It not only gives you something to look forward to, but it also gives you a purpose for working out if you feel you’re lacking one.”
We all like to spoil ourselves. Why not do it while staying fit? Rewards give you all the more reason to work out because you know that something good is going to come of it. There’s nothing like finishing a long week of workouts and finally getting that extra day of rest you needed or making it through an entire HIIT session so you can buy that air fryer you’ve been dying to get.
Rewarding yourself for your hard work is definitely a reason to smile and have fun while exercising. It not only gives you something to look forward to, but it also gives you a purpose for working out if you feel you’re lacking one. So the next time you’re at the gym and you find yourself becoming bored, just think of a reward that will make you feel like this workout is totally worth it.
