Giving back to the community is so important but it can be difficult to know where to start. So many people are struggling around the world as a result of natural disasters, loss of income, health issues, and more. I often hear people say “I want to give back to my community” or “I want to save the planet for my future children” but they don’t know where to start. This article explains how to give back to the community in four easy ways. Being more socially and environmentally conscious is simple through activities like volunteering, donating, recycling, and educating others.
How to Volunteer in the Community
How to Donate to the Community
How to Recycle in the Community
How to Educate Yourself and Others in the Community
1. How to Volunteer in the Community:

© 2023 Canva®A great way to back to your community is by volunteering your time to local charities. Volunteering is incredibly important to helping those in need and is a really simple way to give back.
Volunteer Match is an excellent resource for finding volunteering opportunities in your local community. Once you open the link, type in the city or zip code where you are looking to volunteer. This will generate a list of different organizations that are currently looking for volunteers. The options can be filtered based on the type of cause you are interested in supporting, the skills you have, and the distance from your preferred location. You can also search for specific organizations that you may have an interest in volunteering for. For example, if I am interested in helping the elderly, I may search for “nursing home” to view opportunities in my local area. This is a great resource to refer to when looking to give back to your community.
If you feel uncomfortable working at the site of a charity, virtual volunteering options are also available. Many charities welcome assistance from individuals who are willing to talk on the phone, provide online tutoring, or assist with online projects, such as social media marketing or communication initiatives. These volunteering activities can all be completed from the comfort of your own home.
Businesses are also often looking for ways to give back to the community. A great way to donate through your workplace is by organizing team-building activities at a local charity. Many charities welcome corporate groups to volunteer at their sites. These programs are a great way to build relationships with your team members, while also having a positive impact on the community.
2. How to Donate to the Community:

If you don’t have money to give, you can also provide charities with in-kind donations like blankets, clothing, socks, coats, and cans of food.
Charities are often looking for clothing donations. An article from the NY Times provides additional guidance on how to donate and repurpose clothes you no longer need. Kaitlyn Wells, the author of this article, explains what types of clothing can be donated, where items can be dropped off, alternative donation options for charities that cannot accept clothing donations, and more.
In the City of Buffalo, The Buffalo City Mission is a local charity that accepts donations. This organization specifically requests clothing, undergarments, toiletries, and food donations.
As stated above, companies are often looking for ways to be more environmentally and socially conscious. Some companies have implemented programs where employees can donate to charities directly through a payroll deduction. These programs are often automated so that a donation automatically deducts from your paycheck each week, and is distributed to the chosen charity. Some companies even offer a match program where the employer will donate the same amount as the employee to the chosen organization, doubling the charitable donation. Businesses may also provide donation collection spots onsite to allow employees to conveniently give in-kind donations. I encourage you to check if your company has programs similar to this!
3. How to Recycle in the Community:

The United States Environmental Protection Agency provides a great list of frequently asked questions to differentiate between the types of items that can be recycled. This is a great resource to refer to if you are confused about how to effectively recycle.
Unfortunately, some grades of materials cannot be recycled. This is why reducing the amount of single-use plastics and other materials used is even more important than recycling. Items like plastic straws, plastic bags, and plastic wraps are low-grade plastics that often cannot be recycled. Therefore, it is important for us, as consumers, to reduce our use of these items whenever possible. These single-use products can often be easily replaced by reusable products. For example, using a reusable straw, rather than a plastic straw, or a reusable water bottle, rather than a plastic water bottle. These are very simple solutions to help reduce the quantity of single-use materials.
The video below provides some additional insight into how materials are recycled, the benefits of recycling, and how to recycle in your everyday life. Understanding the recycling process is a very easy way to learn how to give back to the community.
4. How to Educate Yourself and Others in the Community:

Environmental issues are a major concern today. One effective way to give back to the community is by educating yourself on climate change and learning how to take action to address the various environmental concerns present throughout the world today.
In today’s society, misinformation is often spread because information it is so easily posted and consumed on platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok. Make sure you refer to credible information sources when learning how to give back to the community.
The Climate Question, a BBC podcast, is a great resource to learn more about climate change. The episode below discusses the frequent dismissal of climate change and the belief that climate change isn’t real. Neal Razzell, journalist and podcast host, and Marco Silva, BBC Climate Disinformation Reporter, discuss the science that supports climate change trends. The experts have an interesting discussion regarding how to talk to individuals who may be dismissive of climate change. They provide a variety of recommendations to handle a situation like this, such as asking dismissive individuals questions on their viewpoint, establishing trust in the discussion, and not simply telling the individual that they are wrong. It’s important to approach these conversations in a respectful and informative way to be as effective as possible. The Climate Question podcast episode can be found below:
