How can you truly better yourself? In life we encounter a serious of events that conform us into our present selves. Our foundation is fashioned by our early beginnings, but our present self is constantly changing according to what we encounter. There are moments that convict us to be better but also moments that make us want to hide. Moments where we feel so confident that we can grasp the attention in any room yet other times where our self-worth is put to the side to remain in comfortable connection. Times where we feel the need to break the cycle and other times where we want to conform to what already is. Life is nothing short of a rollercoaster ride that forces you to become okay with the scary feeling before the big drop. Each ride is not the same, each drop is not as steep as the last one, sometimes it’s smaller than expected other times it’s bigger. But learning how to navigate the commotion is how we better ourselves for what’s ahead. What does the term ‘better yourself’ look like for you?
Moving forward to better yourself can mean different things to different people. However, here are some general ways to easily better your life:
1. Shifting Your Perspective
When starting to better yourself for improvement, it begins with perspective. The way we view the world is interconnected with the way we act. Two people could be having the same experiences but because of their perspective, can have two different outlooks on what their reality is. Getting a better perspective can help you see things from a different angle and make better decisions, which essentially betters yourself as a person. If your mind is fixated on abhorrent things happening, then you will see anything less than what you expected to be insufficient. Contrastingly, if you fixate your mind on understanding even when ill fortunate things happen, they can become lessons on how to now life your live in a better way than you were before. So, challenge your next negative thought or action and reframe them in a more positive or constructive way.
2. Being Authentically You

” I am the master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul.”
Maya Angelou
To better yourself you have to know yourself and to know yourself is how you live life being authentically yourself. You cannot become better if you are steadily trying to be someone that you were not created to be. Being true to yourself helps build your self-confidence because you are not trying to be someone you are not. You are comfortable with who you are, and you are not afraid to show your true self to others. When you are being yourself, you attract people who appreciate and accept you for who you are, and you can build more meaningful relationships with them. Trying to be someone you cannot lead to superficial connections that lack depth and meaning. Create a better understanding of your values, beliefs, strengths, and weaknesses by making this a constant realization. This self-awareness allows you to make decisions that align with your true self and helps you achieve your goals.
3. Setting Goals
Goals help you focus your efforts and energy on the things that matter most to you when it comes to making the choice to better yourself. By setting specific and measurable goals, you can prioritize your time and resources to achieve what you want to accomplish. Goals provide motivation by giving you a clear target to work towards. They help you stay motivated and committed to taking action, even when faced with obstacles or setbacks. This can be a great source of encouragement and motivation as you work towards achieving your goals. Setting goals helps you gain clarity about what you want to achieve and why. Throughout life you will come short but being consistent in your goals will train your mind to understand resilience. This will help you better yourself as you progress because you will not only measure good by the number of good things that happen to you. But rather measure the good in life by events that force you to learn and overcome to get closer to your goals.
This can also help you make better decisions, stay focused, and avoid distractions. Goals provide a sense of accountability because they give you a clear standard to measure your progress against. This can help you stay on track and ensure that you are taking the necessary steps to achieve your goals.
4. Setting Boundaries
In each of our lives we need healthy separation from the repetitive world we live in. Mentally, emotionally, and physically we may become drained as a result of not setting these boundaries because it sets us outside our comfort levels constantly. As we do the work to bettering ourselves, that means being able to understand ourselves well enough to verbalize our needs. By setting and maintaining boundaries, you can feel more confident and empowered. This can help you to communicate more effectively and assertively, which can lead to greater success in all areas of your life. It requires clear communication, which can help to improve communication skills overall. It also can help to develop better listening skills, understanding, and empathy. Essentially, this all converts to establishing more healthy relationships that actually serve instead of constantly taking. When it comes to wanting to better yourself, speak up! Respectfully!
5. Rest Yourself
Rest is just as important as work, exercise, and other daily activities. Make sure to prioritize rest and relaxation in your daily routine and give yourself permission to take breaks and time off when needed. When you choose not to rest when you need to, you become less of who you are to yourself and those around you. Running on empty in order to reach an objective, automatically becomes too expensive. Rest is important for mental health. It can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Lack of rest can lead to burnout, irritability, and difficulty concentrating. Rest can also increase productivity by allowing you to recharge and refresh your mind. Taking breaks and getting adequate sleep can actually help you accomplish more in less time. Benefit yourself by recharging so you can show your best self to the world.
When you make the choice to better yourself, you are choosing to create an evolving space for yourself in the world. To better yourself is not always about your circumstance but how can you optimize yourself in spite if any circumstance you may be in. We are here on this earth to become who we need to be, not to just to take up space. But often times making that decision to better yourself requires an inner fight to be better than what we know, it usually requires us to be more than what we’ve seen. Taking that leap and investing in yourself prescribes strength that only some can take a hold of. Upon finishing this article, I hope you take the necessary precautions in relational boundaries, set goals and congratulate yourself when you reach them, walk into rooms being yourself instead of conforming to your environment, shift your perspective to understand mistakes do not end your purpose, and most importantly, rest.
