The journey of life and the never-ending chase for success is not easy. We always find ourselves facing stressful challenges through the ups and downs, leaving us discouraged and wondering, how do you handle stress?
A lot of us tend to ignore stress rather than handle it, believing that it will just vanish with time, but is that true? or is it just an escape from reality that will lead to future negative consequences?
Stress is an unavoidable part of life. During all the events we pass through in our lives, we face tremendous pressures. However, with the proper measures of handling stress, we can reduce the effects of stress on our lives, making it an ally rather than an enemy to our success in life.
While you might feel stress is out of control and difficult to handle, there are several methods you can add to your daily routine to regain control and relieve the pressure that is holding you from achieving the things you want in life.

In this article, you will understand your biggest enemy, stress, and know the answer to how do you handle stress, and the ways to defeat the biggest enemy to your success.
What is Stress? And Why Does It Happen?
Stress is a natural body response to pressure. Different events in an individual’s life can lead to that pressure growing, and our bodies respond to that pressure with stress. Life is full of challenges, and stress usually happens when we face new events in life, things we are not familiar with, and find difficulty adjusting to. That is why understanding the answer to “how do you handle stress?” is vital for people to understand in facing the biggest enemy to their happiness and success, stress.
As a result of stress, our bodies tend to react to the pressures we are exposed to due to a situation by releasing stress hormones that trigger several responses within our bodies.
Human beings react differently to stress depending on the level of stress. Although high levels of stress can be dangerous to an individual, stress can also be helpful when handled correctly. While it might yield several subtle emotional responses, stress can lead to many harmful physical and mental consequences if left unattended.
How Do You Handle Stress?
How do you handle stress is a question that everyone wants the answer to. It is indeed not a simple process to eliminate the biggest enemy to our success, stress. There are several steps you should follow to help reduce stress:
1. Recognize the Triggers of Stress In Your Life
As simple as it sounds, the process is not so straightforward. Stress can result from many events in life, and addressing the sources of stress is the first step to realizing the issues in our lives that need to be resolved.
• Write down all the events you are currently passing through in a notepad
It is as simple as that. Write down all the events you can think of that you are currently passing through. This will help you better understand where your stress might be coming from and will help you better understand how to handle your stress later on.
• Start a Stress journal

You can start arranging a short period, 10 minutes daily perhaps, to note down all the events that you passed through during the day. The document should include your daily reaction to:
- Causes of your stress because of the event.
- Your feelings and responses to the event both emotionally and physically.
- The steps you took to feel better throughout the situation.
A stress journal can be something close to a diary but includes more details on the events one passed through within the day, and the feelings resulting from specific situations. Doing so will help you keep track of all the events that might lead to feelings of stress or anxiety you are having. This is a good exercise to have a strong foundation in your answer to how do you handle stress.
2. Identify Where Changes Can Be Made
You might be exhausted with the number of deadlines you have at hand, or you might be overthinking about the reactions of others to your actions. Take it easy on yourself. Start by making a list of to-do things and arranging priorities to feel more organized. Feeling lost might be one of the reasons why you are witnessing stress.
Examples of situations that could be changed to reduce stress:
- Instead of delaying priorities till the last minute, start by organizing a neat list that puts you to get things done. Leaving things till tomorrow will not help you finish your tasks and will only add to your stress.
- Realizing that what happened in the past is in the past. Overthinking past events will not help you become the better person you want to be. Learn from your past, let go, and move forward.
3. Build Healthy Habits
Building healthy habits is a significant contributor to our total well-being, and most precisely, our healthy stress handling. Not only will doing so help you handle stress, but it will also provide benefits to your physical and mental well-being.
• Do daily exercises
It is okay if you don’t have the time to go to the gym daily and become an athlete to defeat stress. You can add some simple exercises to your daily routine to help you better stay in shape and most definitely feel better about yourself.
There are plenty of exercise routines and programs available online. However, I found this workout program to be super beneficial for me to maintain my physical shape and feel energetic and alive in the morning as soon as I wake up:
• Practice Yoga and meditation
While it might seem irrelevant, Yoga and meditation will provide you with excellent benefits for your health and mind well-being. Yoga and meditation have proved beneficial to health as they work out the muscles in the body, breathing and help clear the mind from tension and stress.
Meditation is also a great exercise for the mind as it helps kick out the negative energy from the body, clear mind, and relax the tension through breathing exercises. Try doing a 5 minutes session in the morning, and go from there.

4. Take Breaks From the Work at Hand
Sometimes we get caught up with the number of responsibilities and work we have at hand, whether at work, school, or other things. However, always remember to take breaks from work at hand to make sure you don’t wear out. Try taking a walk outdoors and breathing some fresh air. This will help you concentrate more and restore the energy you spent while working hard.
Treat yourself with a treat after you feel you’ve accomplished a lot. You deserve to feel good, and your hard work needs to be appreciated, and there is no one better to appreciate your accomplishments rather than yourself.
5. Make Room for You to Enjoy Life
How do you handle stress if you don’t have the time to scratch your head? We all know how busy life sometimes gets with the never-ending work, family, and life responsibilities and duties. However, never forget to take time for yourself. Do the things you enjoy the most, and make room for yourself to break free from all the tension by doing the things you love. This will relax you and restore your energy so you can get things done later on.
Be careful, however, not to get too attached to leisure time because you want that to be your relaxing stop rather than the lifestyle you live. Stress can result from accumulating all the pressure we pass through in our daily lives, and making some room for the things we enjoy might help us unload the stress off our shoulders.
